Back in my high school and college days, I mostly listen to acoustic music and love songs. It’s because it gives me sort of inspiration and some good feeling.

Once I’ve entered into my professional career and freelancing in computer programming, I start to experiments with a different genre of music to help me to focus more. I find the kinds of music help me to do a great focus especially when you combine it with a good headset. These combinations make me say: ‘Goodbye world for now’.

I don’t know yet the science behind this but it was quite important tools in my arsenal to meet a great focus and get things done. My understanding is that it reduces the noise outside of my working environment so that I could focus on actually doing.

When I’m listening to music to try to produce something, I avoid those playlists that have lyrics and love songs ’cause it interrupts my flow and sometimes brings some sort of emotions. When it happens it drastically affect my mood. So avoid those at all cost.

Some music that really works for me are those classical, jazz, techno upbeat and acoustic( with no lyrics)

Other things like Upbeat songs and party music drastically change my mood when I try to start my exercise. It makes me move my body without thinking about it.

Last time, when I don’t feel like writing at all I just put my headset and start playing my favorite playlist in Spotify. Boom! I was hook and I couldn’t stop anymore. It seems the lazy self inside me just kick out at those moments. It triggers something in my brain to start typing. I think I should do it often.

There are times when I don’t need some much focus like if I just need to reply to emails and do admin task. I move to other music with a more lively mood.

For reference, here are some of the playlist that I’ve used from time to time.

How about you, are you using as well music to stay focus?

P.S. When I was typing this I’m currently listening to techno music =)
